Exchange 2013 SP1 co-existence Exchange 2010 SP3 Roll up 4 Out Of Office not working for Exchange 2010 mailboxes

Hello,

We are currently running Exchange 2013 SP1 co-existence with Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 4.

Our Outlook Anywhere and OWA are pointed towards Exchange 2013 CAS servers.

User mailboxes are still on Exchange 2010.

Outlook Anywhere   with Exchange 2010 mailboxes are able to connect via Outlook 2010.

The only issue is when Outlook Anywhere is being used from Internet or from Internal network and user goes in Outlook 2010 -> File -> Automatic replies get the following error: -

"Your automatic reply settings cannot be saved.  The server might be unavailable, or your automatic reply message might have exceeded the size limit on the server"

This only occurs if connection goes via Exchange 2013 SP1 CAS server.  It was working before and it seems it just broke down since we upgraded to Exchange 2013 SP1.  In HTTPProxy EWS logs on Exchange 2013 SP1 CAS server I see this when I re-create the issue on Outlook 2010.

=========================

I have checked and double checked using https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/ and there are no issues in "EWS".

It works fine if user mailbox is on Exchange 2013 Sp1.

I was wondering if anyone has co-existence of Exchange 2013 SP1 and Exchange 2010 SP3 could you please test Exchange 2010 mailbox via Outlook Anywhere and see if you could re-create this issue.  After spending a week on this I wonder if it is some sort of bug in Exchange 2013 SP1.

Thanks,

Raman

Exchange 2013 Performance Monitor Data Collector Sets

$

I've noticed that the Exchange 2013 install created two data collector sets within Performance Monitor:

  • ExchangeDiagnosticsDailyPerformanceLog
  • ExchangeDiagnosticsPerformanceLog

These sets are creating daily log files saved in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Logging\Diagnostics\DailyPerformanceLogs that are about 500MB in size, which are filling up our system volume.

I've tried stopping them, but they get restarted automatically. I also tried deleting them, but they get recreated automatically. Is there a way to disable these? We have a 3rd party tool that we use for performance monitoring and would like to avoid having to delete these log files on a regular basis to keep our system volume from filling up.

As a workaround, I've changed the path where the log files get saved to a non existent drive letter, but would still like to disable the Data Collector Sets completely.

Thanks,

-Cory

Exchange 2010 mailbox not able to access auto-mapped Exchange 2013 CU3 mailbox

Hi,

We are in co-existence with Exchange 2010 SP3 and Exchange 2013 CU3.

Outlook Anywhere and Autodiscover pointed towards Exchange 2013 CAS servers.  Everything works fine irrespective where is mailbox is located Exchange 2010 or 2013.

When I tried to access auto-mapped mailbox from Exchange 2010 as primary mailbox accessing auto-mapped Exchange 2013 mailbox "Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance".

Exchange 2013 OutlookAnywhere "Externalclientauthenticationmethod" is Basic and "Internalclientauthencitcationmethod" is NTLM.  Everything is setup as per the Tech-net recommendations.

Checked both these articles but still it is not working:

Please let me know if there are any other ideas.

Exchange 2010 DAG Member Restart

Hi, we have a two node Exchange 2010 DAG. I'm trying to find out the correct way to restart a single node to perform maintenance i.e. windows updates. Various posts suggest running the start dag maintenance scripts but as we only have two nodes it isn't possible. So, is it just a case of running 'switchover server' to make sure there are no active databases and then restart?

Help with distribution groups - Exchange 2013

$

My company, on old its old mail server, used a number of fairly large mailing lists.  The behavior of these lists were such that our people would receive an email that was from "mailinglist@ourcompany.com on behalf of sender@ourcompany.com".  When our users replied to one of these messages, the reply would go back tomailinglist@ourcompany.com (NOT tosender@ourcompany.com).  In this way, replies would also be sent to all users on the mailing list without using the reply-all button.

We would like to have similar behavior with our new Exchange 2013 server, but the behavior of Exchange distribution groups seems to be that emails received by users on the distribution group are simply fromsender@ourcompany.com and replies go only to that particular sender.

Using reply-all here to send to everyone on the distribution group is not a feasible solution.  Some of our users have many dozens, sometimes hundreds, of Outlook rules that rely upon mailing list emails coming in frommailinglist@ourcompany.com and not from individual senders.

Is there a way to make Exchange behave in this manner?

The search server can't find an object to execute the search. Please contact you administrator for assistance. The message from the search server is "the active directory user wasn't found, <.'.

All arbitration mailboxes exist. I have removed them all and recreated them. i have removed the discovery mailbox and recreated it as well using 'Enable-Mailbox -Discovery"DiscoverySearchMailbox {D919BA05-46A6-415f-80AD-7E09334BB852}"'

and gave the discovery group full access... all commands completed successfully.

test-mailboxsearch works on all databases as well.

I dont see any errors in the event viewer on the mailbox server.

Retrieving Mailbox Folder Information from an RDB

$

Hi all --

I'm looking to do a New-MailboxRestoreRequest to recover some specific folders (deeper than top-level) from an RDB mailbox to a production mailbox.  However, before I initiate the restore, I'd like to verify that the production mailbox has enough space to accommodate the folders I'm restoring.

Obtaining folder size information from production mailboxes is straightforward, but I haven't yet seen a way to do it with folders in an RDB mailbox.

I'd like to avoid having to use MAPI and keep this to PowerShell cmdlets if at all possible.

Any help/clues appreciated,

James Mooney, EMC Corp.

Error when adding new database to Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG

$

This is a new Exchange 2007/2013 SP1 coexistence.

We are using IP-less DAG in 2013 SP1/Server 2012 R2. (DAG without cluster administrative access point)
There are only 2 members in the DAG and a random witness server.  Servers are MAIL101 and MAIL102 and the witness is AP104.  I've used generic domains so don't get hung up on that below.  Databases are DB1, DB2, DB3... etc..

I get the following error whenever I add a new database to the DAG.

warning
Couldn't communicate with the Microsoft Exchange Replication service on server "MAIL101.us.rootdomain.rootdomain" to pick up new configuration changes for database "DB3 Archive". Make sure that the service is running and that the server has network connectivity. Error: A server-side administrative operation has failed with this error: The database operation failed due to a transient condition. Error: The database operation failed due to a transient condition. Error: Unable to query Active Directory for database 'dbba2bc2-b1ed-4e3a-9b00-56df3e83017e'. You can try the operation again, and you may not get the error. [Database: dbba2bc2-b1ed-4e3a-9b00-56df3e83017e, Server: MAIL101.us.rootdomain.rootdomain]

Please restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on server MAIL101 after adding new mailbox databases.

After restarting the information store the database seems to mount just fine.  Is this error common or is there something else involved here?  I get initial seeding problems on these databases as well, but again restarting the information store after creating the DAG copy and just waiting a couple minutes or telling it to resume seem to solve the issue as well.

It doesn't ultimately seem to be a problem as I can work around it in the end, but I want to make sure I won't have some sort of long standing problem or if there's a way to solve the warning.

Dynamic Distribution Group Difficulties

$

I am attempting to create some Dynamic Distribution lists on Exchange 2010, but I am having some difficulties.

What I am trying to do is create the lists based on the division each user is in ie "E - Full Time" the attribut is in AD and is listed in the attribute editor, but I cannot seem to find a way to index it with the command line:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>New-DynamicDistributionGroup -Name "test2" -RecipientFilter {(RecipientType -eq 'UserMailbox') -and (division -like 'A- Officer')}

It pukes with the following error:

Invoke-Command : Cannot bind parameter 'RecipientFilter' to the target. Exception setting "RecipientFilter": ""division" is not a recognized filterable property. For a complete list of filterable properties see the command help."(RecipientType -eq 'UserMailbox') -and (division -like 'A- Officer')" at position 41." C:\Users\someuser\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\server.domain.com\server-p.domain.com.psm1:26024 char:29

+$scriptCmd = { & <<<<  $script:InvokeCommand `

+ CategoryInfo          : WriteError: (:) [New-DynamicDistributionGroup], ParameterBindingException

+ FullyQualifiedErrorId

It would seem to me that if it is a queryable attribute in the LDAP it should be able to be used as a search term from the exchange console.

ANy help would be appreciated.

Exchange 2013 - Removing a database and deleting folders but they still reappear!!

Hi

I created a new database and moved all the user mailbox's plus discovery mailbox;s over and all went well, i then unmounted and deleted the old database in ECP and stopped all the exchange services and deleted the old database files and folders from the C:, i noticed i was still getting some errors with windows backup and after looking around i notice for some reason under program files/microsoft/exchange server/v15/mailbox the old db folder appears with the sub folders 'indexmeta', 'journal' and 'ms', it seems that the last trace of the old databases is still being used because the date is always todays date! everytime i delete these foldersers they come back!!

I think this is the reason why the windows backup is failing with 'this application will not be available from this backup'

any help would be appreciated!

Maximum concurrent users that can connect to a single mailbox

$

Good day,

I have been researching this for a couple hours now and can't seem to find an answer.  I have a client that wants a SINGLE mailbox to be connected to by 40 users.

I have been up and down the Throttling question and it appears that there are two different opinions on this:

1     Throttling is a PER MAILBOX setting

2     Throttling is a PER USER setting

So my question starts with, "Which is it?"

If the answer is #2, then the question still remains, "How many discrete users can connect to a single mailbox?"

In advance I thank you for taking the time to even read this post amongst the thousands.

Have a lovely weekend.

Where the hell is the Antispam GUI interface

PLEASE don't tell me to use powershell (for anything) I truly truly truly despise powershell.  I'd be running Linux or DOS for the past 20 years if I wanted to use the more "powerful" interface of a command prompt.

Exchange 2007 had a lot of features missing in the GUI and they finally brought back some of them such as mailbox sizes.   Please tell me we didn't take a huge step backwards with 2013.

The web management is painfully slow - it would be nice if they gave you an option of using the old console on 2013 - one so it would be easy to find things you've been doing for the past 6 years and two so it loads faster.

Exchange 2013 CU1 Outlook Web App LogOff with Basic or Windows Integrated Authentication

$

Hi all,

Exchange 2013 CU1 has a new OWA LogOff behaviour when Basic or Windows Integrated Authentication is configured. When clicking the LogOff Button you receive the message "Close All your Browser Windows.." but OWA does not sign out. This is not the case when using Formbased Authentication...

The problem in our case is the OWA publishing over the Internet via TMG. When publishing via TMG, only Basic and NTLM authentication is supported. This means you have to change the Authentication for the OWA Virtual Directory to basic or Windows Integrated. OK so far, now we can use the TMG Authentication Form. but... TMG is not able to Catch the OWA LogOff. So we will still receive "Close all your Browser Settings.." and no log out from OWA.

It is a known issue that TMG cannot catch the OWA Logoff with the Exchange 2013 CU1 Release..So my Question:Does anyone get that "Real LogOut" fixed via TMG or directly on the CAS Server for Exchange 2013 CU1?

I know another possibility is to activate Form Based Authentication on the CAS Servers and external users directly authenticate against the CAS Server without pre-authentication at TMG Level, but this of course does not provide the highest security we can have.

Missing the "Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate"

Hi Everyone,

I have a single Exchange box.

Was integrating my Lync and Exchange and noticed some issues after configuring my Lync pre-reqs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj721919.aspx

Following the line of communication and event logs, I quickly saw that the error was not on my Lync Server, but on my Exchange.  The "Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" that is created during Ex2013 install was missing. It was not there to give out tokens for the Server to Server authentication required to integrate Lync, Exchange, and Sharepoint.

Running Get-AuthConfig: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj215766(v=exchg.150).aspx pointed to a thumbprint that did not exist anymore.

I confirmed this by checking the local cert store (local computer>personal>certificates), looking in the ECP (servers>certificates), and also running Get-ExchangeCertificate

In my Exchange Server event log, I found the following errors:

Googling has only produced one article that is about another issue that I would have found further down the line if I wasn't testing within the pre-reqs.  The solution is the same, but the article is somewhat poorly written and does not respond to all the comments enough to leave one feeling it's 100% correct.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/jenstr/archive/2012/11/22/getting-internal-server-error-500-when-creating...

The broad strokes are clear:

The fix is to create a new "Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" by using the following sequence of cmdlets In EMS on the MBX server:

1. New-ExchangeCertificate -KeySize 2048 -PrivateKeyExportable $true -SubjectName "cn= Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" -FriendlyName "Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" -Services smtp

Do not accept to replace the SMTP certificate when prompted

2. Note the thumbprint of the new certificate. Let us assume it is 7A39541F8DF58D4821967DD8F899B27410F7C081

3. $a=get-date

4. Set-AuthConfig -NewCertificateThumbprint 7A39541F8DF58D4821967DD8F899B27410F7C081 –NewCertificateEffectiveDate $a

Accept to continue despite the fact that the certificate effective date is not 48 hours into the future

5. Set-AuthConfig –PublishCertificate

6. Make sure to remove any potential reference to the previous certificate (which might not exist anymore) by doing Set-AuthConfig -ClearPreviousCertificate.

Remember to do iisreset on both CAS and MBX servers. Then finally, you can try to re-issue the New-CsPartnerApplication cmdlet.

65 Million Dollar question:

Is the syntax in part 1 correct?  Two people says to add the domain?  Jens responds, but it's vague.  What would the correct command look like?  I do not know where to add the -DomainName within the command and which name I should add?  The FQDN of the CAS?

New-ExchangeCertificate -KeySize 2048 -PrivateKeyExportable $true -SubjectName "cn= Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" -FriendlyName "Microsoft Exchange Server Auth Certificate" -DomainName server.domain.com -Services smtp

Thank you everyone

Let's clarify what I'm talking about first. I am TOTALLY not a client guy so please help. Open outlook 2010, see the right pane that has the calendar, tasks, maybe frequent contacts? Tasks is just empty for this user. Now if I go to the bottom left menu, select tasks, everything is there.

here's how I can re-create the issue

Move User to my New 2013 environment

Move user back to Old 2010 environment

Tasks preview is gone.
